biography.
A German ex-pat since 5 years living in New Zealand Phil Brökelmann has rocked crowds at Auckland¹s and Berlin¹s notorious nightclubs alike (Watergate, Bar 25, Berghain Kantine, Arena Club...)
Groove is always the essential element of his dj sets. Over the years he has supported a wide range of people from DJ T, Steve Bug and Matthias Tanzmann on the tech-house side of the spectrum, to freestylers Tom Middleton, King Britt and Recloose. His club sets cut corners around deep techno and percussive house depending to whom and when he's playing, and what he¹s had for breakfast.
Phil Brökelmann¹s own house productions and remixes (also under the Shortboard moniker with Gerard Masters) echoe a European edge, but he is not hesitant to add field recordings and dub touches, especially since he became part of the DJ community in New Zealand.
In 2004 he set up Curl Curl, a niche label specializing in underground club tracks from Australia and New Zealand, distributed through Intergroove. The label is run jointly with André Quaas (who also owns Moon Harbour Rec). Curl Curl¹s concept has been to put out original down under tracks combined with European remixes. Curl Curl released talents Deepchild, Francisco Foo and Bennson (AUS) and Simon Flower, Andi Numan and Opensouls (NZ) to international dj feedback from Peter Kruder, Laurent Garnier, Loco Dice, Nick Curly etc.
